Provide Opportunity for Preservation
Membership in CSAA is made up of persons across the country who share a passion for one-room schools. Members are dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the country school experience. The organization is mainly involved with preserving one-room school buildings, researching the history of the one-room school era, and encouraging educational programming and re-enactments.
CSAA provides its members with the opportunity to exchange ideas, publish information, and share resources. Over the years, close friendships among members have developed, and ideas and knowledge among participants has greatly expanded.
Since 2001, CSAA has held an annual conference in June. Conferences take place in various parts of the United States. Each conference includes a tour of one-room schools and historical sites in the area. A coordinator plans details, keynote speakers, presenters, and activities. During the conference, an annual business meeting is conducted, and several awards/grants are given out.
The awards and grants promote the goals of CSAA. Information about how to apply for each one can be accessed separately. Each award/grant has its own application form and criteria. The awards / grants include the following: Scholarship and Artistry Award, Preservation Grant, Service Award, Disaster Relief Grant, Innovative Instruction Grant, Conference Fellowship Grant, and Schoolhouse Registry.
Since 2013, CSAA has sponsored a Country School Journal, an online publication found at www.countryschooljournal.com. The journal includes interdisciplinary articles about one-room schools and enables readers to explore country schooling. In addition, an electronic newsletter publishes items of interest more frequently at https://www.csaa.typepad.com .
